In any given year the combined crop of other sugar-producing states in the South was less than five percent of that of Louisiana. With State aid, arrangements were made in 1937 for emergency hospitalization at Donaldsonville. The Hites acquired other individuals though purchase, inheritance and by birth. In 1889 there were 19 white and 18 colored free schools. Rillieux was a free black man born in New Orleans who went to Paris for his education and became an engineer, scientist, and inventor. Other plantation slaves, especially skilled ones, escaped to cities like New Orleans and passed as free blacks. J. F. Young, Dr. Kittredge donated a site on Bin Hall for a church.
